William and Jane Hartley are the parents (I think) of Mary Ann Hartley, born 1797-1800 in Tadcaster. Mary Ann Hartley married William Hodges in Tadcaster in 1822. She came back from London, where her children were born,to live in Tadcaster and is mentioned in the 1841 and 1851 Census lists. Also she gets mention in the list of Tadcaster inhabitants as Mary Ann Hodges living with her two children, Thomas John Hodges and Catharine Hodges. She died in York in 1865. Her husband, William Hodges, was a portrait painter from London, but it seems that he lived in London and she decided to return to Tadcaster (maybe he deserted her). It is possible that this William Hodges was related to William Hodges R.A who sailed with Captain Cook on his second voyage. The son from the marriage (Thomas John Hodges), married the daughter of the Wood Agent, James Elliot, at Castle Howard. He (Thomas John Hodges) was my great grandfather. If you have any positive proof of Mary Ann Hartley's birth in Tadcaster around 1800, I would be delighted to hear. I cannot find her in the birth records. She left substantial property and money to her son, in her Will. With thanks,Deirdre O'Neill (nee Hodges)Or was she the granddaughter of Thomas Hartley, twice Lord Mayor of York?
